Domestic Violence High Risk Team
A New Program With A Big Impact
Crossroads Safehouse provides a comprehensive range of resources and support for individuals affected by domestic violence. One of our newest and most critical initiatives is the Domestic Violence High Risk Team (DVHRT). This team focuses on identifying and intervening in high-risk intimate partner violence cases in Larimer County to reduce harm to victims and increase offender accountability. Our goal is to provide wraparound support and legal education to victims facing the highest levels of danger.
DVHRT utilizes an evidence-based, 11-question assessment called the Danger Assessment for Law Enforcement (DALE) to determine a victim’s level of risk. This tool, developed using research from the Geiger Institute, helps identify cases with the highest potential for severe harm or fatal outcomes. If a victim’s score indicates high risk, their case is added to the DVHRT caseload for immediate attention and support.
The DVHRT consists of multiple partner organizations that meet biweekly to ensure high-risk cases receive the necessary support and do not fall through the cracks. Victims who choose to participate receive individualized assistance based on their self-identified needs. The Fort Collins DVHRT was established in partnership with Detective Wootan, who brought expertise from similar programs in another state. With collaboration between Crossroads, law enforcement, and other community partners, our local DVHRT launched in November 2024.
When a case is identified as high risk, Fort Collins Police Services notifies Crossroads immediately. Our team reaches out to the victim as quickly as possible—always within 24 hours. Advocates provide personalized support, which may include safety planning, emotional assistance, guidance through legal and court processes, updates on bond hearings, and enrollment in offender release notifications. Navigating these steps alone can be overwhelming, which is why Crossroads is committed to ensuring every victim has access to the resources and support they need.
