*Emily’s best friend had just passed away when she knew it was time for a change. Life was too short to continue living the way that she was: afraid, unhappy, and at the whim of her partner’s moods. After another argument escalated to violence, she knew the first step to changing her situation was to escape her partner’s reach. Through some research online, Emily discovered Crossroads Safehouse and decided to set out for Fort Collins for a chance to restart.

Overwhelmed by what was next, Emily began working with an advocate to help her create a plan. She saw financial independence as the key to freedom from abuse, now and forever. Not long after her arrival, Emily found a job and was researching her options for going back to school. With the help of her advocate, she was able to create a budget, take out student loans, and save money for her own apartment. As her stay at Crossroads wound to an end, Emily’s advocate expressed how impressed she was by Emily’s initiative. Emily replied with gratitude for the support, and said it was the first time she had felt she had control over her own life.

“Innovation” is often used as a buzzword. But at Crossroads, the organization is truly living this value.

“I had the opportunity to talk with Executive Director Lori Warren about the innovative work happening at Crossroads – including the ambitious launch of the Family Justice Center in late 2025. I left the conversation feeling proud that Fort Collins, the little town in Northern Colorado where I grew up, is leading the nation in a cutting-edge approach to creating real change.”

August 17th was National Nonprofit Day. At Crossroads, we are reminded daily that our work is only possible because of you, our community of supporters, volunteers, staff, and survivors who inspire us. National Nonprofit Day is a chance to pause and recognize the incredible impact of our team, it’s also a reminder that every single day counts in building safety, hope, and healing.

This month, we are proud to recognize Sage Madden as our Volunteer of the Month!
